This is the story of a four–week “long canoe” tour through the Western Solomon Islands by a young art teacher and his three young surfer friends.
While the surfers seek out the perfect wave along the way, the author, Dennis Steley, seeks out and talks to the old men who remember the way the islanders were before the missionaries came and how the missions helped to change them from murderous, warring tribes to a peaceful people with great numbers of Christians in the population. He also relates and updates the history of the mission work, especially that of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, as it relates to the various places he visits.
