ONE BOOK...Ten Talents
Review by
" A Good Cook... TEN TALENTS" Vegetarian Janet Spangler

When I became a vegetarian in 1974, I was only going to try it for one week. If I believed back then that I would "become" a vegetarian, I probably wouldn't have tried Cookbook - a review by it at all. In the '70's, vegetarian diets were not too common. My interest was peaked when I heard someone speak at my brother's church. He was in his 90's, full of energy both mentally and physically, and had been a vegetarian for over 70 years! My question was, "what does a person eat, if they don't eat meat?" I liked the idea, but it seemed impossible. Meat and sweets were my typical fare, I didn't even LIKE vegetables. It was only for curiosity sake that I even tried such an unusual diet.

After the first week, I found it wasn't too difficult, so I tried it for another week. Then, another week. Before long, an unusual thing happened: my food cravings began to shift. Instead of craving my typical hotdogs and hamburgers, I was interested in sauteed vegetables and salad! I began experimenting on my own, until I found a book that would become my 'food bible', "A Good Cook... TEN TALENTS" Vegetarian Cookbook, by Rosalie and Dr. Frank J. Hurd. It was just what I needed, just when I needed it.

I began pouring over the pages, trying recipe's, and spending hours at a time reading and learning. My favorite pages were the pages that describe the health issues that can happen from not getting enough of certain vitamins and minerals, along with what foods contain those vitamins and minerals. To this day I remember my Ten Talents studies, and the lessons I learned about food combining. My Ten Talents cookbook is torn and tattered, and has been very well loved. I lent it out a couple of times over the years, and always made sure I got it back without too much delay. My typical recommendation speech went something like this: "If you want ONE BOOK on vegetarian eating, I absolutely believe it should be Ten Talents. It's not just a cook book, it's an eating and lifestyle book."

My interest and knowledge in eating vegetarian grew over the years. I'm happy to say, I have a fair amount of knowledge today, thanks primarily to Ten Talents. It's pretty simple, really. Eating according to the recommendations in Ten Talents not only keeps me thin, it also gives me energy! Thirty-eight years later, I'm still eating vegetarian.

In January of 2012 I searched for a Ten Talents Food Combining Chart. I had heard of other food combining theories, but none made sense like what I had learned from Ten Talents. When I found the website, I immediately ordered two charts. To my delight, the very next day I got a call from the author herself, Rosalie Hurd. I told her about my torn and tattered Ten Talents Cookbook, a book that will always have it's home in my kitchen. I couldn't understand "replacing" it! But, I believed Rosalie when she said the new addition was even better. So I ordered my new Ten Talents Cookbook. My favorite vegetarian book, truly has become updated, prettier, bigger, and even more user friendly than before! Obviously I'm a long-time Ten Talents advocate. I am thrilled to see Ten Talents is still out there, and still improving! Another sign that pure information, wisdom, and truth are timeless.

THANKS!
Review by
Thank you soooooo much for taking the time to talk with me, and offer much-needed help in my mission towards restoring health.

Most of all, I want to thank you both for dedicating your time and energy in applying God's anointed wisdom to creating this amazing health manual. I thought I was just getting a cookbook with pictures to help me learn how to make natural dishes.
When I opened the book I was absolutely amazed at the wealth of information contained therein. Overcome with emotion, tears of joy filled my eyes as I realized the faithfulness of God in keeping His promises as I flipped through the book. Many of the foods that aid in natural healing of the body are foreign to those who have been raised on and maintained by the standard American diet for years. So many people are suffering and need precisely this information I too have suffered tremendous pain and illness for years and conventional therapies have proven only to be more detrimental to my health with no real reprieve.
This manual is a true blessing.

Words cannot express my sincere gratitude for finding this most valuable information.

May God continue to bless your ministry!

Every Home Should Have Ten Talents
Review by
I AM THOROUGHLY ENJOYING THIS COOKBOOK! Wish I had purchased it years ago, when I first saw it at the Adventist Book Center.

The new updated, pictorial edition is one that every Adventist home should have. It's obvious that a tremendous amount of time and effort was put into this cookbook. I agree that it should be read through several times as it's more than a cookbook. So many valuable tidbits of information, facts, and E.G.White quotes. The photographs are the finishing touch!

I also purchased cookbooks for both my son & daughter-in-law (who have 3 young daughters and 1 son), and for my daughter and son-in-law (who have a 9-month old daughter). My daughter followed the suggestions given for nursing mothers to increase their milk production, with good results. She has also started her baby on the fresh fruit combinations mentioned in the cookbook, using her baby food mill. Baby also liked salad greens, as suggested in the cookbook, pureed in the food mill and then added to mashed avocado.

I had mentioned to you that our church had a bread baking class using your whole wheat bread recipe (that a church member had from the original Ten Talents). We ordered an entire case of cookbooks after that one class!

Thank you for the wealth of information contained in this cookbook--it has been a great blessing to me. It was a pleasure to speak to you. May God continue to bless you in your ministry.

Having worked as a professional chef who continues to enjoy cooking, I find the recipes tedious but fascinating imitations of traditional American dishes.
