Bert. B. Beach was born 1928 in Gland (Switzerland) to American missionary parents and was educated in France, Switzerland, and the United States. His family entertained visiting pastors, teachers, and church administrators frequently, and Bert was just as interested in theological debates as administrative discussions. Not surprisingly, his potential was discovered early—he became the principal of a church school in California at the ripe age of 21. By all appearances it was the beginning of a solid career in education.
But God had additional plans in mind for him, plans that included religious liberty and inter-church relations on a global scale. Bert learned five languages, worked on six of the seven continents, visiting about 140 countries and rubbed shoulders with some of the world’s most influential religious leaders. He stood up for Religious Liberty in front of Prime Ministers, Chief Justices, Governors, and leaders of other denominations. Step by faithful step, this man has been determined to follow Jesus’ path—and God’s direct leading in his life is both humbling and inspiring.
He acted lifelong as a leading advocate for religious freedom and has been influential in changing Christendom’s perception of the Seventh-day Adventist Church from that of a marginal protestant church to a recognized and respected Christian world communion.
Until his retirement in 1995 Beach was director of the Public Affaires and Religious Liberty department of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Church, a position he had occupied for 15 years. In 1980 he helped to establish the Council on Inter-church/Interfaith Relations in the Adventist world church headquarters (General Conference). Since 1995 Beach’s responsibilities were concentrated more and more on leadership for the Adventist world church in inter-church relations. Beach also served for 32 years as secretary of the Conference of Secretaries of the Christian World Communions (CSCWC), representing close to 2 billion Christians in several church families.
So about what is his book? In his memoires "AMBASSADOR FOR LIBERTY, Building Bridges of Faith, Friendship, and Freedom," he looks back on the lessons he's learned and the world leaders he has met. He praises the "Almighty God, who covers our weaknesses, sees the end from the beginning, and 'doeth all things well.'"
The first section of his book deals with being, or becoming, presents what happened in his life in a reasonably chronological order. The material in the other two sections – doing and thinking – present first activities, appointments, events, and finally his thoughts about life and the Seventh-day Adventist Church in a more turning, circling, even jumping-around style. A special chapter "Inter-church Relations" is dedicated to relationships, dialogues and conversations with other Christian churches or denominations.
The reader will enjoy and absorb some of the author’s exuberant energy, while also absorbing much information and learning life’s lessons of the church's ambassador to other denominations. Therefore Beach’s refreshing and insightful Memoires are a must reading for anyone interested in religious freedom and engagement in inter-church collaboration.
